This training is a self-paced, online learning module designed for Defense Language Institute instructors. The purpose is to introduce DLI instructors to a new way of developing authentic listening material. These materials are to be designed for Semester I Arabic language learners.Teaching vocabulary in context using authentic materials, with interactive listening, while implement multimedia principles and using Camtasia software is a new application for Camtasia and video software in general.
DLI's learning environment depends on developing authentic listening materials to support the curriculum. However, in selecting video, DLI instructors randomly select videos from YouTube and give them to their students. After finishing this training, DLI instructors will recognize the effectiveness of using Multimedia, Contiguity, and Signaling principles in their authentic listening. The most important thing is that they will be introduced to Camtasia software. This will contribute to teacher professional development and provide Defense Language Institute students with good quality interactive authentic listening experiences.
To develop this training, we used Camtasia software applying multimedia principles to create interactive tutorials as well as using Adobe Captivate software to support Camtasia training. The training was assessed using pre and post-attitude surveys, pre and post-tests, and a usability survey.
